Investor Presentation (March 2024)

QPT's founder and CTO, Rob Gwynne, Executive Chairman, James Cannings and lead investor for the current round Geoff Haynes, the co-founder of GaN Systems, run through the latest investor deck as well as running a live Q & A session.

Driving the world’s electric motors more efficiently

QPT has developed a motor drive that reduces losses by 80%, and is up to 100x smaller than existing solutions. Finally unleashing the full potential of Gallium Nitride (GaN) transistors to power the world’s electric motors.

Watch our short overview of QPT’s technology

GaN - The future of efficient power electronics

Gallium Nitride (GaN) transistors are the future of power electronics as, theoretically, they offer significant power savings. But GaN transistors have to be switched at 1 to 2 nanoseconds in order to operate efficiently at super high frequencies of up to 20MHz, to deliver efficiency benefits and the highest power density. This creates huge ElectroMagnetic Interference (EMI) and thermal issues.

Current solutions limit the potential of GaN

Companies that claim to have GaN solutions for high power, high voltage applications that use hard switching are using fixes or workarounds, such as variable slew rates, that throttle back the switching speed so that EMI is no longer an issue. However, running at dramatically slower switching speeds negates the major power saving benefit that GaN has to offer. Thus, in reality, all current, high power GaN solutions are no better than existing Silicon Carbide (SiC) or Silicon ones and, in some cases, even worse on power usage!

Unleashing the full potential of GaN

QPT is the only company that can run GaN transistors efficiecntly at super high frequencies of up to 20MHz without EMI issues or overheating to really deliver the promised power savings of using GaN.

Turnkey solution for existing systems

Our qGaN™ modules are high voltage GaN transistors packaged with our proprietary qDrive technology to achieve unparalleled (<2ns) switching speeds and a thermal design that allows the full power handling and ultimate efficiency of the transistor to be realised – for the first time!  When deployed with our WhisperGaN™ construction system, the EMI is reduced to a whisper, making EMC qualification a breeze, instead of the nightmare that power engineers have with any previous high voltage GaN products.

Silicon-based power transistors will be replaced and the choices are SiC or GaN. As explained elsewhere on the website, driving GaN at speeds greater than 100KHz creates unacceptable ElectroMagnetic Interference (EMI) so it has to be throttled back which makes its performance similar to that of SiC so there are no benefits. There are also significantly increasing heat losses as the switching frequency increases.

QPT has solved these EMI issues with a series of patented innovations that enable GaN to be unleashed to operate at much higher frequencies to deliver all the benefits of increased power savings, minimal heat losses, and significantly higher power density for much smaller power converters which is very important for mobile and many other applications. These innovations come from decades of experience in Radar, RF, plasma engineering and many diverse areas of advanced electronics systems design and development. The result is QPT-controlled GaNs providing improvements in the efficiencies of power conversion of up to 80% while being delivered in integrated driver power transistor modules, that offer a familiar construction approach to power engineers but, when deployed with our WhisperGaN construction technique, offer very easy EMC qualification (easier than discrete SiC or Silicon based systems).

This graph shows how the inefficiencies of other technologies means that the energy losses result in major problems with heat. Whereas QPT-controlled GaN is up to 80% more efficient so much less energy is wasted with hardly any heat.

Why this is important

For the sake of the planet, the world needs to cut back on its use of electrical energy and the main usage, at 45%, is by electrical motors*.

QPT is a cleantech company that is the first to devise, patent and build a new, much more energy-efficient ways to control electrical motors and slash the energy they need by up to 10% or more.

That means cutting the energy costs of running heat pumps, air conditioning systems, motors, electric vehicles, pumps, industrial equipment, robots and more.

Global adoption of our innovative, clean technologies is a practical way to make huge saving in carbon emissions to reduce climate change.
