Executive Team

Rupert Baines
(CEO)

Rupert is serial entrepreneur in deep-tech startups. Most recently he was CEO of UltraSoC, sold to Siemens in July. Before that he was CMO at Picochip, who pioneered the idea of 4G/5G small cell basestations, exit to Mindspeed then Intel.

Rob Gwynne (Founder & CTO)

Rob has 35 years of experience in multiple fields. He started life training as an instrument maker and manufacturing jeweller at an early age (child labour in family business!) From there, his career has taken him to many places around the world – South Africa, USA, Canada, Germany, UK and Vienna where he has designed many systems and developed patented technologies. His technical experience spans digital, analogue, mixed signal and RF electronics, EMC, radar, DSP, FPGA, software development (embedded, drivers, application level), advanced PCB layout and simulation, optics, precision instrumentation, motion control, power systems and plasma physics… this wide experience of diverse technologies is the inspiration for QPT’s IP.

James Cannings
(Executive Chairman)

James co-founded MMT Digital and grew it to be one of the UK’s leading technology businesses. Following the aquisition to MSQ he became the groups Chief Sustainability Officer, a passion he brings to QPT to ensure both that we are a low emission organisation, and to help convert our impact into trees or carbon emissions saved.

Advisory Board

Geoff Haynes
(Advisor)

Geoff is a legend of the power electronics world. A well-respected figure with an expansive CV spanning many decades. Most recently Geoff has been known as one of the founders of GaN Systems, so few people on the planet understand the significant benefits of pushing GaN transistors to their limit, or how challenging that is.

Tony Astley (Advisor)

Tony spent an impressive 29 years with TI before being known as a key figure at GaN Systems, driving their recent growth as their Director of EMEA Sales. Tony’s support is invaluable to QPT given his deep understanding of our customer base, his personal contacts and knowledge of the supply chains.

Mark Bennett
(Advisor)

Mark is Director of Hardware Partnerships for Google (Pixel, Google Home, Nest and Chromecast) in APAC having previously led the international business of Google Play.

Girvan Patterson
(Advisor)

The highlight of Girvan’s fifty-year career as an engineer and entrepreneur was his time, starting in 2008, as Founder and CEO of GaN Systems, the world leader in gallium nitride power devices, and acquired by Infineon in 2023.   His extensive track record of successful start-up management and exits will bring invaluable expertise to QPT.

Core Team

Mark Davidson
(Business Development)

Mark is a highly experienced senior executive who has worked both within Fortune 500 companies and in start-ups, particularly in the semiconductor industry. Most recently he was the CEO of Odyssey Semiconductors, supporting them in their quest to launch a revolutionary 1200V GaN transistor, so understands QPT’s market extremely well.

Graham Oliver
(Senior Engineer)

Graham has been working in the deep tech sector as an engineer since 1979 across a hugely diverse set of fields around the world. Like Rob, Graham’s skill set goes beyond standard power electronics and this broad skill set has been hugely valuable in the development and testing of QPTs unique set of IP. His diverse CV includes being the Principal Systems Technologist and Systems Program Manager at Gintek Avionics (now part of SAAB Aerospace Sweden) and Principle Engineering roles at W Vintner Ltd, Virata and Globespan.

Vanesa Young
(Executive Assistant)

Vanessa is a highly experienced office manager and Executive Assistant and has worked in the deep-tech sector her whole career. Most recently she worked as the office manager for our lead advisor, Rupert Baines, and supported them through to their exit to Siemens in 2020.
